PHOENIX, AZ—NOVEMBER 19, 2011—Two-time Futurity winner Downtown Richard posted the top qualifying time for the $35,000-estimated AQRA Turf Paradise Open QH Derby trials on Saturday afternoon.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will return to the Arizona raceway on December 3rd and vie for the winner's purse in the 400 yard event 3-year-old American Quarter Horses.
Under jockey Rick Oliver, Downtown Richard won the second trial by ½ length over Opportunity Runaway to set the top mark of :19.695 seconds. It was a 101 speed index and the sixth career win for the gelding owned by Rigoberto Guillen.
Leonard Espinoza trains the chestnut sired by KELOWNA KASH out of the High Brite Thoroughbred mare Ky High. The winner of two futurities last season came into the trials off a third place effort in the October 23rd Desert Classic Derby.
Bred in Louisiana by Painted Horse Enterprises, LLC, Downtown Richard has earned just under $100,000.
Jesus Javier Borboa's Opportunity Runaway held on for the second fastest time of :19.777 seconds. Matthew Fales conditions the Wave Carver filly out of Strawfly Six, by Strawfly Special. The Deon & Company Oklahoma Bred has won three of 12 career starts and earned $10,515. Roberto Valero rode her.

Kelowna Kash's progeny Downtown Richard...

Two-thirds of the 2010 Arizona Triple Crown have been claimed by the same horse.
Downtown Richard pulled off this feat in the final leg of the trio of stakes, the
Grade 3, $66,262 AQRA-Turf Paradise Futurity held December 12 at Turf Paradise. The two-year-old gelding also claimed victory in the first leg of the Triple Crown, April's Desert Classic Futurity-G3, also held at Turf Paradise.
The two stakes wins stand out as the highlights in a busy rookie campaign that includes four firsts in 11 outs--and counting, with another start looming in New Mexico. "It's no too many," Marquez said. "Every horse is different."
At the finish line of this latest stakes final, the difference between Downtown Richard and Flash Point proved slim. Downtown Richard broke second from the six-hole, and remained in that position 1/2-length behind then-leader Quik Check at first call. Downtown Richard narrowed the gap on Quik Check to a head going in to the stretch. Both he and Flash Point overtook their rival in the final yards, with Downtown Richard beating Flash Point to the wire by just a head.
Jockey David Reyes-Frisby rode Downtown Richard in to the winner's circle after the 400-yard trip, completed in 19.769 seconds to tally a 99 speed index.
"He's a very good horse. He's running for the money," Marquez said of Downtown Richard. "He's going to be better and better."
Downtown Richard has been plenty good in his first competitive season. The $33,131 payday for this latest victory improved his total bankroll to $82,815 for owner Rigoberto Guillen. The gelding has qualified for five futurities this year, finished in the top three in eight of his 11 total outs, and place no worse than fourth in any start this season. "The horse really trains hard,' Marquez said, adding, "Sometimes, when you get a bad break, you're gong to run bad---any horse."
Downtown Richard did not compete in the Margie Bryan ASOA Futurity, the middle leg of the Arizona Triple Crown. Bred by Painted Horse Enterprises LLC, Downtown Richard is out of the Thoroughbred Mare Ky High. The gelding also is the top money-winner among the first crop sired by Kelowna Kash, a former All American Derby qualifier.
Flash Point (Flame Thrower TB -QRS Pride), a huge underdog at nearly 90-1 odds at post time, finished a close second for owner/trainer Derek Couch. Jockey Cassie Papineau was aboard, Quik Check (Check Him Out-Quik Bux) settled for third. Giambi Stables LLC owns the gelding, saddled by trainer Raul Hernandez for jockey Vince Guerra.
Completing the field were Miss Sonora Cartel (Cartel Boss-Easy As She Goes), Lifes Been Good (Heza Motor Scooter-Nola Darling), JM First Dude (Check Him Out-Shyann Cash), Takin On Stoli (Takin On Spoon Man-Honor Stoli), Take A Corona (Corona For Me-Fast Flyin Nanny) and Quick Pearl Two (Quick Action TB-Fast Pearl).
