11/5 Sterlie Bertram / $103,850

Sterlie Bertram Memorial
Hooked On Magic
Hoosier Park
$103,850 - 350-yards
:18.098 - si 90

By Diane M. Ciarloni
For many years, Diana Moster of Seymour, Indiana, harbored a dream of having a horse farm. And the dream was also oufitted with goals. She didn’t dream of just any old horse farm. Instead, she wanted one that was successful on the racetrack, in the breeding barn and in the sale ring while maintaining a sterling reputation in the industry. Indiana, the theater available to Moster for staging her dream, wasn’t the best place in the industry for Quarters or Paints but she was determined.

When Moster met husband Steve, who serves on the QHRAI board, they decided they’d do whatever it took to bring the dream into the world of reality. Today, Moster is blessed with the good fortune of actually living her dream. Part of it was standing in the winner’s circle at Hoosier Park on October 23, following her homebred Hooked On Magic’s impressive trip in the Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stake.

“I was a barrel racer at one time,” explained Moster, “but the dream was a horse farm. We started running Paints in 1998 after we bought a mare by Indians Image. We were in Quarter Horse racing six years later.”

Moster bought a mare named Hooked On Clover from Gary Jacobs in Texas in 2000. She didn’t realize when the ownership was transferred, but that deal was the start of something big. Moster bred Hooked On Clover to First Down Laveaux and, in 2004, Hooked On Laveaux hit the ground. The mare eventually won three stakes, set new track records at 250 and 350 and earned $87,138.

Hooked On Laveaux’s final racing season was in 2007 and her first foal will be by Ivory James. The 1990 Hooked On Clover produced Royal Quick Charm by Royal Quick Dash, who currently stands at stud for Moster. She also produced the three-year-old gelding Hooked On Magic who, as noted, owned the Hoosier winner’s circle for a few minutes on October 23.

“These horses can run anywhere, not just in Indiana,” insisted Moster. “It doesn’t take long to realize that you must maintain a positive attitude in this business. You say I will be successful and you go from there. Horse people in Indiana have worked so hard on our racing program and, now, it’s paying off.

“We just knew Hooked On Magic was going to be good and we were excited that he’s a three-quarter brother to our stallion and a half-brother to Hooked On Laveaux. “In some ways, we let Hooked On Laveaux’s race record dictate our direction for Hooked On Magic. She was excellent from 250-yards to 350 so we felt Hooked On Magic would be the same way.”

It’s a logical thought progression but, for Hooked On Magic, it turned out to be somewhat faulty. The dark brown, almost black, gelding broke his maiden in his first start going 300 in May, 2009. Then he hit a winless, seven-race wall, not breaking through again until May of this year in a 330-yard allowance.

Something important was happening during that time. Raul Hernandez, a noted trainer in Arizona for the past several years, decided the financial pickins’ were just a bit too slim at Turf Paradise and the Arizona fair circuit. He made a huge decision to move to Indiana and take advantage of the significant financial sea change that was going on there. Veterinarian Amy Youngblood introduced Hernandez to Moster.

“I didn’t know him prior to that,” said Moster. “He told me that he realized he had to prove himself in Indiana and I asked if he’d like to do some of that proving with our horses.” The answer was obviously yes.

Hernandez has taken Hooked On Magic through three starts. The first was in August when he finished second in an allowance. The second was October 8 in the Sterlie Bertram trials, winning his heat with the fastest qualifying time of :18.008.

Hooked On Magic and qualifying jockey Harold Collins had the six-hole for the finals. The gelding made a clean break and was always within very close striking distance to the lead. Half-way through the 350-yards, he started pulling free and had 1 1/4-lengths to spare at the finish. That margin could mean that, unlike half-sister Hooked On Laveaux, Hooked On Magic may be more than capable of stretching out on the track.

“We originally based our thinking on Hooked On Laveaux but Raul is telling us that Hooked On Magic is able to go farther. If he is, we’ll find out next year provided, of course, that we don’t sell him. Selling is one of the important aspects of our farm. Everything is for sale and we’re especially proud when one of our horses does well for someone else.”

The $59,194 earned from the Sterlie Bertram brought Hooked On Magic’s tally to $120,235 with a 4-3-2 record from 14. This was his first stakes win. He was second in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity last year at Hoosier. Hooked On Clover has produced eight foals with six starters, five winners, six ROMs and two stakes winners. She was bred by Virginia Kohls in Texas.

In second was Havanna Gold (Rare Cigar-Oh Jet Rockette) owned by Jane Lehman, trained by Deane Lehman, ridden by Shanley Jackson. In third was Fillmeup Phil (Brookstone Bay-Miss Reminice) owned by Susie and Bob Piatt, trained by Bob Piatt, ridden by Thomas Johns.

Following were Shez So Kool (First N Kool-Sister Oakie), Uncommon Episode (Coronas Prospect-Uncommon Class), Cb Red Bullet (Takin On The Cash-Ms Special Delivery), I Is It (Executive Menace-Lone Legacy), Fishin For Magic (Fishin Kisses-Air Born Magic), Fantanas Best Cigar (Rare Cigar-Stars Fantana Girl), Quick Pass In Go (Quicksstraw-Visa Flight).
